With reference to the letter from this Department of
the 29th. December last on the subject of the refusal of the
1
Japanese Patent Bureau to register the "Quaisin" and "Farmer
Boy" marks of the British Cigarette Company of Hongkong I am
directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit to you here-
with a copy of a Despatch and enclosures which have been
bilish American
received from His Majesty's Ambassador at Tokyo, together
with a letter which has been addressed to the British
Waces Co. hech 18
American Tobacco Company on the subject.
Sir E. Grey is of the opinion that, although the ex-
planation of their attitude offered by the Japanese Patent
Bureau is far from satisfactory, and entirely evades the real
point at issue, there would be no advantage in pressing the
1
application of the British Cigarette Company in respect of
the marks in question which have now been registered by the
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
